Sitting here at anchor on the West End of Roatan it’s easy to pass the day unknowing of what’s happening all around you. The white sand beaches, blue water, and palm trees lure you into a feeling of serenity. Behind this thin veneer a political coup has taken place in Honduras. Everything has been peaceful and there is currently no cause for alarm, but the country is torn between a President who has been overthrown by the Supreme Court and a new President who was appointed by the same legal body. The only signs we see of this activity is the heavy police presence on the streets of Roatan at night. Officially there is a curfew, but the island is peaceful and life goes on with no real interruption.
Just to be safe, Maria and I will most likely let go the mooring ball tomorrow and sail out to Cayo Cochino while things settle down on the mainland. We expect and foresee no problems, but are keeping a close eye on the situation. We’ll be taking an overland trip to San Pedro on the 3rd after which I’ll be making for Isla Provedencia as fast as I possibly can. I am late and we are firmly into hurricane season.
