I just wrote a friend an email and realized I couldn’t sum things up any better in a separate blog. So, I am repurposing that email here.
I am pretty confused at the moment about what to do. Leaving Kemah with a SE wind just sucks no matter where you are going. It’s also predicted to be variable anywhere from the E to S so I can’t even pick a target to aim for. If I am going on a beat I’d almost rather just beat down to Campeche or Progresso (Yucalpeten). I’ve been laughing about it the last few days, but as I sit here with my boat buried in the mud from so little water I am just getting frustrated.
As crazy as this sounds, I am thinking about just heading out into the Gulf on Sun or Mon and seeing what I can do. I’ll start heading south with as much east in the course as the wind allows and hit either FL, Isla, or Campeche. Seems anywhere but Padre Island is going to be a beat so I should just pick the shortest one and go for it. That or wait for another front after Xmas. Not even considering the ditch.
I’ve clearly gotten frustrated waiting for the weather to cooperate. I am still knocking down some good projects like equalizing the batteries, hanging hammocks for produce, and securing some cushions with line. I’ve been having a lot of fun with the crew from s/v Soel who are about to slip their lines as well. That freak of a front I wanted to ride to Campeche brought snow to Kemah for the first time in four years. We made the most of it. Everyone dance a little jig or invoke your own superstitions for a mild cold front. I want to get moving.
